One of the things I heard time and again when my Body Snatchers in the Desert book was published in the summer of 2005, was that not only was there no evidence to support the notion that diabolical human-experimentation was the cause of the Roswell controversy; but, in addition, there was no way that government and military agencies, offices and departments would ever even consider engaging in - or sanction - such terrible actions.

Really?

I have to say that the faith and trust (or, as I prefer to call it, the outright, naive gullibility) that people have in government never ceases to amaze me.

Consider the following. For what is perhaps the most shocking example of the way in which human beings were indeed utilized for radiation-related experiments at the height of the Cold War, we have to turn our attention to something called Project Sunshine.

Although not directly allied with the events as described in my book, the history and activities of Project Sunshine collectively serve as perfect examples (and perhaps far more importantly as officially documented examples) of the way in which human beings and bodies were utilized in Cold War radiation and biological experimentation in a fashion very similar to the Top Secret Roswell-related events as outlined in Body Snatchers in the Desert.

In the 1990s, the Government's Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments looked into a whole range of Department of Energy-related scandals involving the use of human beings in radiation tests from the 1940s to the 1970s.

One particular memorandum, dated June 9, 1995, and prepared by ACHRE’s Advisory Committee Staff, is titled Documentary Update on Project Sunshine Body Snatching and states:

"As part of Project Sunshine, which sought to measure strontium-90, the AEC [Atomic Energy Commission] engaged in an effort to collect baby bones from domestic and foreign sources. As discussed in the prior memorandum, the project involved the use of a cover story (those without clearance being told that the skeleton collection would be used to study naturally occurring radiation, and not that from fallout). Key participants in Project Sunshine at its onset included the AEC’s Division of Biology and Medicine (DBM), its Director John Bugher, Columbia University's Dr. J. Laurence Kulp, and the University of Chicago's Dr. Willard Libby (who became an AEC Commissioner)."

The memorandum then refers to Dr. Willard Libby and his work in more detail. A 1955 transcript classified as "Secret" (located in the classified materials at the National Archives and recently declassified at the Committee's request), sheds more light on the role of tissue sampling in Project Sunshine.

The transcript shows that considerable thought had been devoted to best ways to establish channels to procure "human samples," and the impact of secrecy on the effort. AEC Commissioner Willard Libby, who was a primary proponent of Project Sunshine, explained the great value of "body snatching," and noted that the AEC had even employed an "expensive law firm" to "look up the law of body snatching."

The meeting was then turned over to Dr. Libby, who was by now an AEC Commissioner. Dr. Libby began by stating that there was no effort more important to the AEC than Sunshine. However, he said that "...there are great gaps in the data." He elaborated: "By far the most important [gap] is human samples. We have been reduced to essentially zero level on the human samples. I don't know how to get them but I do say that it is a matter of prime importance to get them and particularly in the young age group."

The supply of stillborns had evidently been shut off: "We were fortunate, as you know to obtain a large number of stillborns as material. This supply, however, has now been cut off also, and shows no signs, I think, of being rejuvenated."

Therefore, Libby told the audience, expertise in body snatching would be highly valued: "So human samples are of prime importance and if anybody knows how to do a good job of body snatching, they will really be serving their country."

Some people reading this, no doubt, will scarcely believe that these latter words were said in all seriousness, and soberly recorded, within official files of the US military.

As noted, Libby recalled that when Project Sunshine was created in 1953, a law firm was hired to study this problem. He added: "I don't know how to snatch bodies. In the original study on the Sunshine at Rand in the summer of 1953, we hired an expensive law firm to look up the law of body snatching. This compendium is available to you. It is not very encouraging. It shows you how very difficult it is going to be to do legally."

The conference attendees discussed the need for a wide enough variety of samples to cover age ranges and potential variations among body parts. A Dr. Kulp, from Columbia, explained that there were certain "channels" available:

"We have the channels in these places where we are getting everything. We have three or four other leads where we could get complete age range samples from different other geographic localities. These three are Vancouver, Houston, and New York. We could easily get them from Puerto Rico and other places. We can get virtually everyone that dies in this range."

There was also discussion of the need to acquire what were insultingly termed "resources" from other countries. For example, a Colonel Maxwell, of the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, suggested the military could provide some help in securing "specimens" from a native hospital in Formosa. In case you're wondering, in the files the term "specimens" refers to people...

This passage is particularly revealing for one reason: when I was doing the research for my Body Snatchers in the Desert book, I was told by several sources that personnel from the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project were deeply involved in the recovery of alleged handicapped Japanese bodies from a 1947 incident at White Sands, New Mexico.

It is, therefore, notable that in 1955, when the Project Sunshine discussions were well underway, one Colonel Maxwell, also of the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, stated firmly that he knew how to acquire certain "specimens" from "a native hospital in Formosa…"

Interestingly, when the this testimony became public knowledge, new sources surfaced with their own dark and disturbing tales – all of which centered upon radiation experiments involving the bodies of children and physically handicapped and deformed individuals.

For example, on June 6, 2001, Reuters, in a news release titled "Babies and Stillborns Used in Nuclear Experiments," revealed that:

"British newspapers reported that some 6,000 stillborn babies and dead infants were sent from hospitals in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, South America, the UK and the US between the 1950s and 1970s without the permission of parents for use in nuclear experiments. According to the reports, the US Department of Energy used the bodies and some body parts for tests to monitor radioactivity levels of the element Strontium 90 in humans…The Observer, a British newspaper, also stated that British scientists also conducted tests on babies sent from Hong Kong and the research did not end until the 1970s. A government spokesman for Hong Kong announced that his country will investigate further into the reports."

Then on June 12, 2001, Western Australia Newspapers Ltd., (WAN) revealed that: "...people with severe disabilities were used as human guinea pigs during British nuclear tests at the Maralinga Test Site in Australia in the 1950s."

According to the allegations, a control group was flown to the British test site as part of an experiment to determine the effects of radiation on humans. The group, stated the WAN, died after being exposed to the radioactive fallout. While such claims were dismissed as unsubstantiated in a final report of a royal commission into British nuclear tests in Australia in December 1985, no less a source than Dr. Robert Jackson, Director of the Center for Disability Research and Development at Edith Cowan University in Australia, expressed concern that the Royal Commission did not hear testimonials from pilots.

Dr. Jackson first discovered details of these gruesome events in the 1980s when he was the Regional Director for the Western Australia Disability Commission. Of key relevance to the subject matter of this book, is an approach made to Dr. Jackson by a man who claimed to be a pilot and who had flown a "planeload" of disabled people from the UK to the Maralinga Test Site. The pilot told Dr. Jackson, "We didn't fly them out again."

Needless to say, I don't find this last statement at all surprising - unfortunately.

The Brazilian Government has just declassified a new set of significant previously secret UFO documents, now covering the 80s. We already had disclosures covering the 50s, 60s and 70s, all with very important documents and information. So far over 4,000 pages have been disclosed.

The recent disclosure is particularly powerful because it contains dozens of reports of UFOs on May 19, 1986, considered the “Official UFO Night in Brazil”, when 21 spherical objects, estimated 100 meters in diameter – according to military sources – were detected by radars and spotted by civilian pilots, and literally jammed air traffic over the major Brazilian Airports, such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Then, several Mirage and F5 jets were scrambled to pursue them.

As a result of that “invasion”, the Air Force minister brigadier Octavio Moreira Lima went public about it the other morning on the national TV network, declaring all facts openly. The pilots who took part in the pursue and their commanders also spoke freely about the pursuits, which occurred over several hours.

We've had several other disclosures since 2007, all as a direct result of the campaign UFOs: Freedom Of Information Now, promoted since 2004 by the Brazilian Committee of UFO Researchers. The latest disclosure comprises over 2,200 new pages of formerly secret UFO documents that were given to the Committee and also sent to the Brazilian National Archives.

In late July, hundreds of papers from the Brazilian Air Force's official System for the Investigation of Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (SIOANI) have demonstrated how the nation's military authorities dealt with the UFO Phenomena in the 60s and 70s.

Considering that SIOANI wasn't a top secret agency and that even civilian researchers took part in its procedures, the structure and functionality of which proves that Brazil is the first country in the world to officially and publicly admit the reality of the UFO Phenomena, and the first to investigate it openly.

The Brazilian UFO Magazine website – www.ufo.com.br – already has thousands of pages for download, such as over 1,200 pages of documents, 200 photos of SIOANI's activities and Operation Saucer, carried out in the Amazonian region in 1977. Along with documents received by the Committee from other military sources.

The mythology and legends of many different cultures include monsters of human appearance but prodigious size and strength. "Giant" is the English word commonly used for such beings, derived from one of the most famed examples: the gigantes of Greek mythology.

In various Indo-European mythologies, gigantic peoples are featured as primeval creatures associated with chaos and the wild nature, and they are frequently in conflict with the gods, be they Olympian, Hindu or Norse.

There are also other stories featuring giants in the Old Testament, perhaps most famously Goliath. Attributed to them are superhuman strength and physical proportions, a long lifespan, and thus a great deal of knowledge as well.

In his book, The Natural and Aboriginal History of Tennessee, author John Haywood describes "very large" bones in stone graves found in Williamson County, Tennessee, in 1821. In White County, Tennessee, an "ancient fortification" contained skeletons of gigantic stature averaging at least 7 feet in length.

Giant skeletons were found in the mid-1800s near Rutland and Rodman, New York. J.N. DeHart, M.D. found vertebrae "larger than those of the present type" in Wisconsin mounds in 1876. W.H.R. Lykins uncovered skull bones "of great size and thickness" in mounds of Kansas City area in 1877.

George W. Hill, M.D., dug out a skeleton "of unusual size" in a mound of Ashland County, Ohio. In 1879, a nine-foot, eight-inch skeleton was
excavated from a mound near Brewersville, Indiana (Indianapolis News, Nov 10, 1975).

A six foot, six inch skeleton was found in a Utah mound. This was at least a foot taller than the average Indian height in the area, and these natives-
what few there were of them -were not mound builders.

"A skeleton which is reported to have been of enormous dimensions" was found in a clay coffin, with a sandstone slab containing hieroglyphics, during
mound explorations by a Dr Everhart near Zanesville, Ohio. (American Antiquarian, v3, 1880, pg61).

Ten skeletons "of both sexes and of gigantic size" were taken from a mound at Warren, Minnesota, 1883. (St. Paul Pioneer Press, May 23, 1883)
A skeleton 7 feet 6 inches long was found in a massive stone structure that was likened to a temple chamber within a mound in Kanawha County, West
Virginia, in 1884. (American Antiquarian, v6, 1884 133f. Cyrus Thomas, Report on Mound Explorations of the Bureau of Ethnology, 12th Annual Report,
Smithsonian Bureau of Ethnology, 1890-91).

A large mound near Gasterville, Pennsylvania, contained a vault in which was found a skeleton measuring 7 feet 2 inches. Inscriptions were carved on the
vault. (American Antiquarian, v7, 1885, 52f).

A 7 foot 7 inch skeleton was reported to have been found on the Friedman ranch, near Lovelock, Nevada, in 1939.(Review - Miner, Sept. 29, 1939)
In 1965, a skeleton measuring 8 feet 9 inches was found buried under a rock ledge along the Holly Creek in east-central Kentucky.

AUSTRALIAN GIANTS

There was a race or group of people found in Australia called "meganthropus" by anthropologists. These people were of very large size--estimated between
7 to 12 feet tall, depending on what source you read. These people were found with mega tool artifacts, so their humaness is difficult to question.
Four jaw fragments and thousands of teeth have been found in China of "gigantopithecus blacki"--named after the discover. Based on the size of the
teeth and deep jaws, its size has been estimated at around 10 feet and as tall as 12 feet, 1200 pounds.

In old river gravels near Bathurst, NSW, huge stone artifacts -- clubs, pounders, adzes, chisels, knives and hand axes -- all of tremendous weight,
lie scattered over a wide area. These weigh anything from 8, 10, 15, to 21 and 25 pounds, implements which only men of tremendous proportions could
possibly have made and used. Estimates for the actual size of these men range from 10 to 12 feet tall and over, weighing from 500 to 600 lbs.
A fossicker searching the Winburndale River north of Bathurst discovered a large quartzitised fossil human molar tooth, far too big for any normal
modern man. A similar find was made near Dubbo, N.S.W.

Even more impressive were fossil deposits found by naturalist Rex Gilroy around Bathurst. He excavated from a depth of 6 feet (2 m) below the surface
a fossil lower back molar tooth measuring 67 mm. in length by 50mm. x 42 mm. across the crown. If his measurements are correct, the owner would have been at least 25 ft. tall, weighing well over 1,000 lbs!

It is certain the Aborigines were not the first to reach Australia. Anthropologists maintain mainland Aborigines are in fact quite recent arrivals that ate their precessors who were akin to the New Guinea natives. Aborigine themselves admit in their ancient folklore that this land was inhabited by several groups of men, as well as giants, before they settled there.

EVEN MORE RECORDS OF GIANTS

In 1936 Larson Kohl, the German paleontologist and anthropologist, found the bones of gigantic men on the shore of Lake Elyasi in Central Africa. Other
giant skeletons were later found in Hava, the Transvaal and China. The evidence for the existence of giants is incontrovertible. "A scientifically
assured fact," says Dr. Louis Burkhalter.

In 1833,soldiers digging a pit for a powder magazine at Lompock Rancho, California, hacked their way through a layer of cemented gravel and
came up with the skeleton of a giant man about twelve feet tall. The skeleton was surrounded by carved shells, huge stone axes, and blocks of porphyry
covered with unintelligible symbols. The giant was also noteworthy in still another respect :He had a double row of teeth, both upper and lower.
When the natives began to attach some religious significance to the find, authorities ordered the skeleton and all the artifacts secretly reburied-
and, of course, lost to the scientific study they deserved.

This particular giant, incidentally, bore marked similarity to another, that of a giant man with double rows of teeth whose skeletal remains were dug up
on Santa Rosa Island, off the California coast. Subsequent research has shown that he, or his descendants, feasted on the small elephants which once
lived on that island and which have vanished like the giants who ate them, countless ages ago.

'The Toxic Lady' was Gloria Ramirez, a 31 year old woman from Riverside, California. Her body may or may not have emitted toxic fumes which made several doctors and nurses in the emergency room of Riverside General Hospital very ill. She was the mother of two children and had been diagnosed with metastatic cervical cancer 6 weeks before the infamous event.

On the evening of Feb. 19, 1994, Ms. Ramirez was brought by paramedics to the emergency room at Riverside General Hospital. She was admitted in respiratory and cardiac distress, and went into full cardiac arrest about 15 minutes after arrival. A nurse named Susan Kane drew blood, probably for an arterial blood gas determination, as part of the routine 'code blue' procedure of the hospital. Nurse Kane noted a 'foul odor' and immediately passed out cold. A doctor (Julie Gorchynski, the senior medical resident) went to Nurse Kane's aid. After seeing to her needs, Dr. Gorchynski noted a strange odor, 'took a deep whiff' of the syringe and passed out. 4 other staff then passed out, all standing right next to each other. The paramedics who rode in the ambulance to the hospital with Ms Ramirez and who remained in the room, as well as one nurse and Dr. Humberto Ochoa, the director of the ER (who came as soon as he heard staff were keeling over in the middle of a code) were all unaffected.

Since other cases have occured where ER staff became ill from fumes emitted by a patient (usually from people who have ingested pesticides, although this can also be a risk to staff working in hyperbaric oxygen chambers with people with carbon monoxide poisioning) the hospital assumed that this was a case of toxic contamination, sealed the ER and evacuated all patients and affected staff (who by now numbered somewhere between 8 and 11, including clerks) and brought in the County decontamination unit.

Ms. Ramirez died in the ER, after the staff tried to rescusitate her for about 35 -45 minutes. The official cause of death was kidney failure due to metasticized cancer. Her body was placed in a sealed body bag and sent to the county coroner for autopsy in a special sealed unit.

In all, 23 of the 37 emergency room staff members experienced at least one symptom. Five were hospitalized for the rest of the night. Gorchynski, the most severely ill, spent two weeks in intensive care, where in addition to apnea she suffered from hepatitis, pancreatitis, and avascular necrosis, a condition in which bone tissue is starved of blood and begins to die. In her case the avascular necrosis attacked her knees, restricting her to crutches for months. It takes a really damn potent toxin to do all that, says Sheldon Wagner, a clinical toxicologist at Oregon State University.

Despite the apparently genuine and severe illnesses of the ER staff, no satisfactory explanation as to what toxin could have caused their illnesses was given. This has led to speculation as to whether mass hysteria could have caused the symptoms experienced by the ER staff.

The most likely alternative explanation is that there was some toxin in the ER and that possibly the hospital covered this up. The hospital had been cited for improper waste disposal in drains. However, they were inspected by nine different city, state and federal agencies after this incident. While cited for some violations in other parts of the hospital, no violations were found that affected the ER.

The hospital did not properly handle the situation with the Ramirez family. First, the hospital suggested that Ms. Ramirez tried to kill herself by ingesting pesticides. This was not an unreasonable initial theory given the situation (which looked very much like pesticide poisoning.) However, it was ill thought out to say this before preliminary lab results were back, since the Ramirez family, like most people of Mexican descent in the area, are devout Catholics. To allege suicide is to allege a very serious sin.

The county confiscated Ms. Ramirez's body for several months and at one point improperly stored it, resulting in significant decomposition. The Ramirez family had to sue to get the body back for burial, but by then it was unfit for viewing.

Many tests, hypotheses and lawsuits were to follow, but an explanation was found, by no less than the famed Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, nearly nine months later. Naturally, the solution to the mystery, not being nearly as exciting as stating the mystery itself, was not well publicized. Dimethyl sulfate, which is cited in scientific literature as a chemical warfare agent, was created by an unusual confluence of chemical reactions.

It is believed that Ramirez used DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), a sort of wonder drug for relieving various arthritic aches and pains. DMSO is metabolized to become dimethyl sulfone, which was found in her system, likely produced by the administration of oxygen by paramedics.

When attendants drew blood from Ramirez in the emergency room, the relatively sudden and sharp drop in the temperature of her blood, from body temperature to the cool air of the hospital, could have created dimethyl sulfate, the lethal compound. Her body temperature was too high to allow creation of the deadly compound internally.

Witnesses at the time said they saw crystals in the syringe containing Ramirez's blood, and scientists now believe those crystals were the source of the mystery fumes.

The step of creating the lethal toxin from the benign dimethyl sulfone was performed at Lawrence Livermore.

The scientists noted that virtually every known side effect of dimethyl sulfate was exhibited by those who smelled Ramirez's blood. Likewise, virtually every symptom displayed by the attendants was consistent with exposure to the toxin.

Also, DMSO can appear oily, which is consistent with the presence of an "oily sheen" on Ramirez's body that some witnesses said they saw.

The family sued the county for medical malpractice and for general damages stemming from the coroner's autopsy. The cases eventually were settled for $800,000, without the county admitting any wrongdoing.

Most of the money went to buy annuities for Ramirez' two children: Evelyn Arciniega, now a 22-year-old student at Riverside Community College, and Buddy Angel Arciniega, 19, who is serving a 12-year prison sentence for voluntary manslaughter.

Brit explorers claim they have spotted a legendary ape man believed to inhabit an island jungle — and snapped its footprints.

The four-strong team and their Indonesian guide were tracking through dense jungle in Sumatra when two of them caught a glimpse of the famous Orang Pendek — or short man.

The group brought back a hair sample and a piece of chewed palm from the island's Kerinci National Park they hope will provide DNA evidence of the beast.

They also snapped a strange footprint thought to belong to the creature.

Sightings of the hairy human-like monster have been made in the area since colonial times — and it is alleged to be immensely powerful.

The explorers hope the sample of rattan palm, which is thought to have been munched on by the Orang Pendek, will contain some of its cells. The palm and hair sample have been sent for testing.

Witnesses have described the beast as being about 5ft tall and say that it walks on two legs.

It is thought to be extremely powerful — with reports of onlookers seeing it ripping apart logs.

After a spate of sightings around Lake Gunung Tuju, in the Kerinci national park, a team from the Devon based Centre for Fortean Zoology — which investigates unknown species of animals — embarked on a two-week mission to the region to see if they could obtain evidence of the creature.

The elusive Orang Pendek shares its habitat with the Sumatran Tiger, pythons, and Saltwater crocodiles.

Richard Freeman, the expedition zoologist and zoological director at the Centre for Fortean Zoology, said he believes the creature is an unidentified species of ape.

"We are not talking about a unicorn or a griffin, we are talking about an ape that's unknown to science," he said.

"It's name means 'short man' in Indonesian.

"It's supposed to be a powerfully built upright walking ape.

"It walks on two legs rather than four - like a man, about five foot tall with dark fur - immensely strong.

"It's been seen since colonial times.

"It's quite possible that in some museum there are skull and bones of the Orang Pendek that have been labelled orangutan."

The team, who have just returned from their two-week expedition, hailed it a success and are awaiting the results of the DNA tests.

Authors, artists and musicians are due to gather at a library in San Francisco to protest against the banning of books in schools and libraries in the US.

The event, part of the 27th annual Banned Books Week, has been organised by the American Library Association.

Since 2001 bans on 3,736 books and other materials have been requested.

In recent years, And Tango Makes Three - based on a true story and centring on gay penguins in New York's Central Park Zoo - has had the most ban requests.

The book's authors are Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell.

In a statement to the BBC on Friday, Mr Richardson said: "It's regrettable that some parents believe reading a true story about two male penguins hatching an egg will damage their children's moral development.

"They are entitled to express their beliefs, but not to inflict them on others."

Reasons given by organisations and individuals for their requests to get it removed from public shelves, include "anti-ethnic, anti-family, homosexuality, religious viewpoint, and unsuited to age group".

Other works featuring in the most-challenged books list for 2008 include Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials and Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner.

Pullman told Britain's Guardian newspaper that he was glad to be on the list. However he added: "Of course it's a worry when anybody takes it upon themselves to dictate what people should or should not read."

The association said the aim of the annual awareness week, which ends on Saturday, is to remind US citizens not to take their freedom for granted.
   
Among those at the San Francisco Public Library event will be authors and musicians Ben Fong-Torres, Richie Unterberger and Roy Zimmerman. They plan to stage a number of performances and defend controversial books.

In 2008 the American Library Association recorded 517 ban and restriction requests. Seventy-four were successful. The organisation recorded that the most common reason given was that contents were too "sexually explicit".

Other classic literature subjected to complaints include JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling also feature on the list.

Earlier this week, it was claimed that Harry Potter author JK Rowling missed out on the Presidential Medal of Freedom because some US politicians believed she "encouraged witchcraft".
