The Air Force is preparing to spend millions researching how unknown “bioeffects” happen when the human body is blasted by radiowaves and high-powered microwaves — which the Air Force hopes could lead to exotic new energy weapons.

Recently, the Air Force Bioeffects Division announced it’s exploring how radiation from non-lethal energy weapons can causes changes to the body at the molecular level. The Air Force is pretty broad about what kind of weapons it wants to test: “directed energy, riot control agents, broadband light, acoustic sounds, and blunt impact materials.” An award for a $49 million contract to conduct studies, laboratory tests and field experiments is expected in September, and tests in San Antonio are expected to last for seven years.

If those weapons are developed by another nation and used on Americans, the Air Force wants to know what kind of unusual health effects its troops might encounter. But there’s a flipside. The announcement notes that discovering new bioeffects on the human body could have “defensive or offensive” uses, and lead to the “development and deployment of future DE [directed energy] weapons.” Hmm.

The Air Force still has to do the research first. For that, it’ll carry out “proteomic, genomic, and metabolomic studies that identify critical biochemical or molecular changes following exposure to DE [directed energy weapons] prior to or during mission operations.” That could mean looking at how concentrated blasts of radio frequency waves and high-power microwaves manipulate our proteins, DNA and metabolites.

To be clear: The Air Force doesn’t want to kill you by messing with your DNA. These are explicitly tests for non-lethal weapons. The announcement notes that the tests may involve human subjects (and animals), and that it will “prohibit research that presents unacceptable hazards or otherwise fails to comply with DoD procedures.”

Most directed-energy weapons are also — in theory — supposed to leave you unharmed after you’ve run fleeing from them, possibly puking your guts out. If the Air Force wants to stop a stranger from approaching a base, a heat-ray or sound-blaster are useful “escalation of force options,” as the announcement sensitively describes it.

That’s somewhere on the scale between an audio warning and shooting the person. And these machines are not exactly new. Sound cannons like the Long-Range Acoustic Device use a combination of audio frequencies that are so loud and horrible it can make you vomit. Being blasted by a pain-ray like the Air Force’s Active Denial System — which uses millimeter waves to make you feel like you just stepped into an oven — will still hurt, but the idea is that you’ll survive. Turn it up to full power, though, and you could put someone in a hospital burn unit.

The weapons also pose something of a diplomatic problem. The Active Denial System was sent to Afghanistan — briefly — before it was recalled without ever being used, considering the propaganda value it would have given to the Taliban. But in the aftermath of the assault on U.S. diplomats in Benghazi and the killing of the U.S. ambassador there, the State Department touted non-lethal energy weapons as one potential defense against embassy attacks.

Though the Air Force building exotic weapons that mess with your biology in unknown ways probably wouldn’t help, diplomatically.

The name Joshua Shapiro has become synonymous with crystal skulls and he is one of the leading experts on what they may ultimately mean. For more than 30 years, he has investigated the mystery surrounding these crystalline carvings, which are human-shaped skulls made out of different types of quartz crystals and other gemstones. Many of the early crystal skulls were initially found in the 1800s in Mexico within or near ancient tombs. Today, however, skulls have been discovered worldwide, including in China, Mongolia, Peru, Australia and throughout Europe.

Shapiro has concentrated a great deal of his efforts on one particular crystal skull which he calls the Blue Skull. In a new book, published by Timothy Green Beckley of Global Communications and titled "Journeys of the Crystal Skull Explorers, Travelogue Number Two, Search for the Blue Skull in Peru," Shapiro tells a fascinating story of how some unseen force seemed to be guiding him to find the Blue Skull, a search that led him to northern Peru and included physical and emotional hardships along the way. Shapiro never actually found the Blue Skull, but his story aptly illustrates that sometimes the journey itself is the real point, not the destination and what one hoped to find there. The following is a conversation with Shapiro in which he tells it all firsthand, as one who has been there and seen the locales of the unknown and found inspiration even in extreme disappointment. 


Q. Were there those around you - family and friends - who tried to persuade you to give up on what some might see as New Age "nonsense"?

Joshua: Yes. Because when I first started out, I traveled "on faith," which means I didn't have a lot of money. And as a result of that, my father and my mother would be very concerned about how would I survive? They just didn't understand anything about what I was searching for, or trying to learn more about UFOs, or who I was and my connection to the universe. So they were very concerned about that when I was younger. But now that I've had more success - my mother passed away and I did have contact with her after she passed away. And my father I think is more used to me now because I'm an author of books and I've figured out a way to make money selling products and services and giving lectures and so on. But in my early days, they were very worried and concerned about me.

Q. When were you introduced to the crystal skulls? What led you to believe they might be authentic? And why would their existence affect you so deeply?

Joshua: The first time I met the crystal skulls was in 1983. Again, I was kind of roaming around on faith, and somehow I found my way to San Jose, California. I visited a metaphysical bookstore called the Ram Metaphysical Bookstore, which doesn't exist anymore but it was across the street from Rosicrucian Park in San Jose, California. I remember I went with a friend, and as we were visiting, and I was sharing with the owner about my first book that I published called "Journeys of an Aquarian Age Networker," she pulled out a picture of an amethyst crystal skull, which captured my attention and I felt a really strong connection with that crystal skull through the picture. So much so that I actually felt what you would call an "inner earthquake," where there was a vibration that was literally shaking me inside and I didn't understand why. And then about half an hour later there was a real earthquake in California, and the table the picture was sitting on was vibrating. So I had an inner and an outer earthquake, which, for most people who are on a spiritual path, there's always going to be something that comes up that's unusual or different or kind of like a message. And then, when I remember looking at the picture of the amethyst crystal skull, something inside of me said, "The crystal skulls are here to help create world peace." And I knew I had something to do with this.

Q. Would you say that people in Peru are more mystical, more open, than individuals you encountered elsewhere?

Joshua: Well, I would say they are more so than in many other locations or countries. In the United States or some countries like Germany, in these countries is where everything is very geared towards science and being in the physical and how much money you have, while the Peruvians, once you leave Lima, they're very down to earth people. If there's a UFO sighting in Peru, they don't think anything about it. They just say wow, that's great. I'm excited to have that. If they didn't see it, they feel like they missed it. So a lot of people in Peru just accept living in nature, and accept paranormal phenomena that go on or if UFOs show up, if a dimensional door opens and something happens. This is just a part of their ancient traditions and culture. So it's really natural for them, versus some of the more modern countries.

Q. Well, how does the UFO phenomenon tie in with the skulls?

Joshua: Well, this is one of the main questions that gets asked frequently related to the crystal skulls, especially the ones we've found that have been made in a superior form. It's hard to imagine that a primitive people could have made some of the crystal skulls that we've found so far. Because the modern carvers right now - they're able to do a very good job as they use these diamond-tipped tools which didn't exist until the 1970s or 80s. And crystal skulls were being discovered of a superior form long before that. So one of the possibilities that we talked about related to the crystal skulls is to try to explain where some of the very old ones may have come from is a connection with extraterrestrials. The question is: could "gods" have been responsible for bringing the original crystal skulls here as tools to awaken consciousness in humanity? One of the proofs of this is some of the crystal skulls, when you use color, light and sound, or human energy, their internal insides will start changing and holographic images and pictures can be seen inside and form. Some of the holographic images that are seen have to do with spacecraft and extraterrestrials.

Q. Tell us something about the Blue Skull and what makes that skull so different from the others.

Joshua: The Blue Skull is what I write about in my new book, published by Global Communications. This crystal skull is not the crystal skull that I really have heard about from the legends of various indigenous people or is discussed in some kind of theory. This is a totally personal experience, and it came to me completely unexpected, which when it presented itself to me, I had to follow it up. I just felt there was some truth to it and I needed to find out if it could be true. Still to this day, I have not physically seen nor touched this crystal skull (The Blue Skull), but on the other hand, every time I think about it, I feel its presence in let's say my aura or electromagnetic energy field. I have some kind of a soul connection with this skull, some kind of a link with it that I don't fully understand. But I have never seen it in the physical. I only have visions of it, and when I feel its essence is around me, I can look at it in my mind's eye and clearly see the skull. But an observer who would be around me now, he would say "Joshua's crazy. There's nothing around him."

But let me tell the brief story of how I had contact with this crystal skull and let the readers of the article decide for themselves. If I'm a whacko, as an archeologist recently said to me in an email correspondence, or it could be I am really telling the truth and I'm just a messenger for the skull as it gets ready to physically manifest in our reality. One thing I would like to mention before I tell this story is that there are documented occurrences of what are called "apported crystal skulls" that have come from the etheric dimension (another dimension outside our physical reality) and just shown up.

One example of this is we have a small skull called "Krishna." "Krishna" was a gift to us through a spiritual medium that lives here in the Seattle area. We attended a séance that he did and he was channeling the spirit of Krishna, which is the same spirit connected of course to India and the religions of India. And after he finished these messages, he started to produce through his mouth, because this is what happens to mediums, is that through their various orifices (the mouth, nose, eyes or ears), these objects can appear. And that evening I would say there were at least 40 objects that came through his mouth. Most were like small gems and jewels, but one of the first objects that came through was an opalite, little tiny crystal skull, which we have in our possession now.

When that skull came through his mouth, everyone knew that it was for us, my partner Katrina and I. And I could sense energetically that it had not settled into the physical reality because energetically it was pulsating when it first came out. So I felt I needed to pass this crystal skull around to everyone and everyone felt a very strong power coming from it. A couple of months later, according to our friend who was the medium that Krishna apported through, he was in his bedroom and a dimensional door opened and about a four or five pound clear quartz skull came through this door and landed on his bed. So I'm saying there is a good possibility that other crystal skulls could just appear out of nowhere since it's already happened to us, receiving an apported crystal skull coming from nowhere that could just manifest. And that's what I think may be happening with the Blue Skull.

So I came across this while I was in Peru. I think it was about 1991. I was just visiting and I was getting ready to leave from Lima to go to Machu Pichu. I was traveling with my ex-wife, who's Brazilian, and her group. She was leading a group of spiritual people, all Brazilians. So she had to speak to me in English, her group in Portuguese and to the local people in Spanish. And she had invited this archeologist who I'd met before that told me that in Peru there was a tribe of people who had possession of a hideous looking green skull. And when the Spanish came to Peru they saw it and it was so hideous they destroyed it. But what happened is, as he was joining us to eat our breakfast, so we could catch our flight to Cusco and then eventually go to Machu Pichu, for no reason whatsoever, he stands up and points at me and says in Spanish, "Joshua knows where there's a crystal skull in Peru."

Now at this point in time, as far as I knew, there had not been any crystal skulls discovered in Peru. There had been ones found in Mexico, and Central America, and of course in my research afterwards there were a few other countries as well where crystal skulls have shown up. But up to that point, I had never heard about one in Peru. Yet this archeologist was insisting that I knew where one was.

As soon as he pointed to me, then I immediately had a vision. I saw in my mind's eye a group of primitive people traveling through the jungle and I felt that, as my body was being pulled towards the north, that this was taking place in the northern part of Peru, which is a part of Peru that you normally don't travel to. Usually you go to the central part, where Machu Pichu and Cusco are, or you go to the southern part, where Lake Titicaca is. But you usually don't go up to the north because these are the pre-Inca cultures that exist in the northern part of Peru. But I was being pulled there. So when I saw this vision, I just laughed to myself. And it seemed like when these people were in the jungle, the head person, the person leading a single file precession, had his hands held out from his body and was holding an object that I assume was a crystal skull because this archeologist had pointed at me saying I knew where one was. 

So I was being drawn to the northern part of Peru and I was seeing this vision. So I laughed to myself privately and said, well, if there's a crystal skull I know about it's probably my favorite color, which is kind of a sky blue, a white bluish color. Well, after I left Peru, having had this vision, in my mind's eye, the energy connected to this Blue Skull wouldn't leave me alone. I would see this crystal skull always floating around me.  Whenever I would think about it, it would appear in front of me, in my mind's eye, at a 45 degree angle slightly above my head. And it would always stay there.

Deep-water dives in the icy, Siberian depths of Yakutia’s Lake Labynkyr have sparked “Loch Ness Fever” in every watery corner of Russia. RBTH looks at expeditions and legends that surround some of Russia’s strangest waters.

The dive made by Dmitry Schiller’s team into the icy waters of Lake Labynkyr on February 1, 2013 could qualify for the Guinness World Records. The team members dived to the bottom of the polar lake at the coldest time of year, in Russia’s coldest region.

The dive has already prompted a blaze of publicity in the Russian media, not to mention the repercussions it has borne. Rumors abound that parts of the skeleton and jaws of a huge animal were found on the lakebed, with the help of camera technology.

The members of the Russian Geographical Society team have since denied this claim, but “Nessie Fever” was unstoppable. Both scientific and pseudo-scientific exploration teams have set off in pursuit of a Russian Loch Ness Monster all over the country.

Fans of paranormal events from RBTH’s editorial team have tracked the movements of different expeditions and compiled a list of Russia’s more obscure lakes that might yet earn the title of “The Second Loch Ness.”

Lake Labynkyr is located at an altitude of 1,020 meters (3,346 feet) above sea level, and its depth is 52.6 meters. The lakebed has an anomalous fissure, with a depth that reaches 75–80 meters.

Locals only ever refer to the lake as “The Second Loch Ness.” Viktor Tverdokhlebov, local lead researcher of a team from the East-Siberian Section of the Soviet Academy of Science, recorded in his notes a sighting of an unidentified animal floating on the lake’s surface and resembling a giant fish.

“It was moving in an arc, at first along the lake, and then it came toward us... a dark-grey, oval-shaped body moved across the water. Against this background could be made out two symmetrical white spots, which could be eyes, and standing up on its body was something like a stick — perhaps a fin.

We only saw a small part of this animal, but we could imagine there was a massive body in the water. It was undoubtedly a predator — one of the most powerful predators in the world,” wrote Tverdokhlebov.

Very possibly, this report by a respected scientist has made the Lake Labynkyr Monster one of the more serious contenders for the role of a Second Nessie, even though the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) has rejected media reports of an alleged large animal jawbone located on the bed of the lake.

With its own “Valley Of Death” and flying saucers, Yakutia is a paradise for fans of the paranormal.

Yakutia has not just one alleged Loch Ness Monster, but two. According to witnesses, Lake Khaiyr, which is located above the Arctic Circle, is home to an unknown animal of monstrous proportions. The animal’s description corresponds closely to the Lake Labynkyr monster.

A 1964 expedition from Lomonosov Moscow State University’s North-Eastern Research Department, led by G. Rukosuev, recorded that a mysterious animal with a long snake-like neck lives in Khaiyr.

A member of a biological expedition team from the Yakutsk Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Nikolai Gladikh, left a written record.

“At 7 a.m. I went to the lake to get water, with a bucket. I couldn’t have gone more than 15 or 20 meters when I heard some kind of splash and saw a huge animal crawling out of the water. It was probably 4 to 4.5 meters [13-14 feet] long, 1.5 to 2 meters tall, with a long neck, maybe 1.5 meters. It had a small, flat head, like a snake,” reads Gladikh’s record.

After talking with locals, a team of researchers was able to gauge that the beast at the center of these stories is generally called the “Bull-Pike.” Despite the fact that the animal’s described appearance is cartoonish, it has not deterred scientific researchers from looking into the case.

The Brosno Dragon

The Russian Ogopogo — a mythical animal known only from reported sightings — lives in Lake Brosno, located in Tver Region. There have been no scientifically confirmed sightings of the beast, but legend would have us believe this is another Nessie.

As the story goes, the Brosno Dragon is a large, lizard-like plesiosaur — an object of fascination for many crypto-zoologists all over the world.

Credence for the legend of these lake lizards is strengthened by the lake’s unusual depth: at 41 meters (134.5 feet) it is the deepest lake in the Tver Region. The decaying detritus on the lakebed, which causes bubbles of hydrogen sulphide to rise to the surface, also adds eerie believability to the story. From a distance, the bubbles give the impression of something moving in the middle of the lake.

Prehistoric animals in Elgygytyn Lake

Elgygytyn Lake is found 500 kilometers (310 miles) to the northwest of Anadyr, which is the capital city of Chukhotka — the farthest-flung region of Siberia. The lake area measures 120 square kilometers (46 square miles), and its depth in some places reaches 170 meters (557 feet).

Analysis of sediment at the bottom puts the lake’s age at 3.5 million years old. Despite its extreme northern location, the lake has never been covered in glaciers — suggesting the presence of some unknown, primordial, life traces in its waters.

Of course, local people have come up with a number of legends of the existence of a “great beast” living in Elgygytyn Lake.

The formation of Elgygytyn Lake is something of a mystery itself. It is perfectly circular in shape, and American scientific journals have speculated that it was formed by a falling meteorite. Alternative theories have posited that the lake basin might be the crater of an extinct volcano.

Lake Svetloyar is a small lake in the forests of Nizhny Novgorod Region, just 12 square kilometers in size (4.6 square miles). In terms of its makeup, it closely resembles other lakes formed 12,000–14,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age.

Lake Svetloyar is one of Russia’s most mysterious lakes. Nothing is normal about it — from the unusual water, the pure taste of which remains unchanged over long years, to the peculiar legend of the city of Kitezh, which mysteriously sank underwater when the Tatar–Mongol army of Batu Khan came to besiege its walls.

Geologists cannot agree on Lake Svetloyar’s origins, despite research that has dragged on for half a century. Some claim it formed on karst systems, which would be a blow to the idea of a city of Kitezh that voluntarily submerged beneath the waters.

Still others claim the lake is formed of solid rock, which is typical for the western part of Russia. Yet this rock structure is lined with faults, and Lake Svetloyar lies at the intersection of two such faults. This would mean that islands, which hypothetically stood in the lake, could indeed be submerged below the water in one of the faults. One such island might have been the site of the legendary city of Kitezh.
