Researchers Say "Hobbit" People Were Not Human
Henry Gee, the editor of
Nature, in a now-famous editorial entitled “Flores, God and
Cryptozoology,” forever tied the finding of the “Hobbits” to
cryptozoology. He wrote: “The discovery that Homo floresiensis survived
until so very recently, in geological terms, makes it more likely that
stories of other mythical, human-like creatures such as Yetis are
founded on grains of truth…. Now, cryptozoology, the study of such
fabulous creatures, can come in from the cold.”
And so it still goes. More new confirmation has come forth that we humans have remarkably, in our recent past, if not actually yesterday, shared the Earth with another hominid species.
In an analysis released on January 20th, of the size, shape and asymmetry of the cranium of Homo floresiensis, Karen Baab, Ph.D., a researcher in the Department of Anatomical Scienes at Stony Brook University, and colleagues conclude that the fossil, found in Indonesia in 2003 and known as the “Hobbit,” is not human. They used 3-D shape analysis to study the LB1 skull of the hobbit and found the shape of the skull to be consistent with a scaled down human ancestor but not modern humans. Their findings, reported in the current online edition of the Journal of Human Evolution, add to the evidence that the hobbit is a new species.
The question as to whether the hobbit was human or another species remains controversial. Some scientists claim the hobbit was a diminutive human that suffered from some type of disease that causes microcephaly, which results in abnormal growth of the brain and causes the cranium to be much smaller than the normal human cranium. But Dr. Baab and co-author Kieran McNulty, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Minnesota, believe their findings counter the microcephaly theory.
“A skull can provide researchers with a lot of important information about a fossil species, particularly regarding their evolutionary relationships to other fossil species,” explains Dr. Baab. “The overall shape of the LB1 skull, particularly the part that surrounds the brain (neurocranium) looks similar to fossils more than 1.5 million years older from Africa and Eurasia, rather than modern humans, even though Homo floresiensis is documented from 17,000 to 95,000 years ago.”
To carry out the study, Dr. Baab and colleagues collected 3D landmark data on the LB1 skull (above) and a large sample of fossils representing other extinct hominin species, as well as a comparative sample of modern humans and apes. They performed several analyses of different regions of the skulls. Taken together, these analyses indicated that the LB1 skull shape is that of a scaled down Homo fossil not a scaled down modern human.
The results of the analysis of the asymmetry of the skulls, which refers to differences between the right and left sides of the skull, refutes the suggestion that the LB1 skull was that of a modern human with a diagnosis of microcephaly. In modern humans, a high degree of asymmetry may indicate that the individual was diseased. At least one scientific study on the asymmetry of LB1 supported the argument that this individual had microcephaly. Conversely, Dr. Baab and colleagues found the degree of asymmetry of the LB1 skull was not unexpectedly high and therefore not supportive of the diagnosis of microcephaly.
“The degree of asymmetry in LB1 was within the range of apes and was very similar to that seen in other fossil skulls,” says Dr. Baab. “We suggest that the degree of asymmetry is within expectations for this population of hominins, particular given that the conditions of the cave in Indonesia in which the skull was preserved may have contributed to asymmetry.”
Dr. Baab recognizes that the controversy as to the evolutionary origins of Homo floresiensis will continue, perhaps without an answer. However, all the evidence that she and colleagues illustrate in their article “Size, shape, and asymmetry in fossil hominins: The status of the LB1cranium based on 3D morphometric analyses,” suggest that Homo floresiensis was most likely the diminutive descendant of a species of archaic Homo.
The results of this study are also in line with what other researchers in the Department of Anatomical Sciences at Stony Brook University have found regarding the rest of the hobbit skeleton. Drs. William Jungers and Susan Larson have documented a range of primitive features in both the upper and lower limbs of Homo floresiensis, highlighting the many ways that these hominins were unlike modern humans.
The Department of Anatomical Sciences is one of 25 departments within the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. The department includes graduate and doctoral programs in Anatomical Sciences. Fields of study include research on human evolutionary anatomy, morphology and vertebrate paleontology. Many faculty members in the department are also participants in an interdepartmental graduate program in anthropological sciences that is recognized worldwide for its faculty and research strengths in functional morphology and human evolution.
It will be recalled that since 2004, skeletal material has been described and discussed from eight other Homo floresiensis, putting to rest that the first discovery was merely of an individual anomaly or a diseased burial of a local person, as Hobbit debunkers proposed.
During 2005, the original discoverers were more open to discussing their initial sense that Homo floresiensis might actually be closer to Australopithecus than Homo. Speculation as to the linkages of Homo floresiensis to Australopithecus was there from the first. Dr. Peter Brown, Dr. Mike Morwood, and others on the original team had this thought from the start, and it remains as part of their ongoing considered analysis of the finds.
Looking back to 1955, in the writings of cryptozoologist Bernard Heuvelmans, he bravely (for his time) wondered aloud if reports of small hominids in Africa were australopithecines.
There is even a formally published scientific article in 1945, by London University’s Dr. W. C. Osman-Hill, which speculated that historically remembered "little people" in south Asia might one day be found to have been based on relict diminutive representatives of Homo erectus.
This was long before the discovery of Homo floresiensis or the contemporary tales of the Flores little people, the ebu gogo. Perhaps even the “Little Yeti,” the teh-lma or pyar-them, are merely regional names or relatives of Homo floresiensis? Ivan T. Sanderson called the Little Yeti the “least known and most neglected by everyone.”
Osman-Hill studied similar folklore, for example, of the nittaewo, the three feet tall hairy hominids of ancient Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The nittaewo were mentioned by Pliny in the first century. They were said by Osman-Hill to have existed, at least, to the end of the 18th Century before being exterminated by "modern" humans through methods that mirror how the humans of Flores talk about killing off the ebu gogo (via fires at the entrances of caves).
Homo floresiensis is part of cryptozoology’s interest in these tales, folklore, and legends.
The 3-feet-tall Homo floresiensis, living on Indonesia’s Flores Island, perhaps do exist today as the small, hairy ebu gogo, the Proto-Pygmies of Flores Island folklore. As noted in my and Patrick Huyghe’s field guide, Homo floresiensis, while connected in the media in 2004, with Sumatra’s orang pendek, probably has a more direct link with the more fully hairy hominid examples, such as Sri Lanka’s nittaewo.

Argentina: Strange Creature Lurks in Moreno's National Park
*** Lights and
prints reveal intense extraterrestrial activity***
A strange succession of phenomena attributed to the extraterrestrial presence, manifesting itself through lights, prints, vehicle sightings and the unique presence of a strange animal that preys in the region, frightening locals and fishermen alike, has its epicenter in a biosphere and dam located in Moreno, barely 40 kilometers from downtown Capital Federal.
The intensive work performed by a group of researchers of this sort of phenomenon delved into the facts as part of an arduous fieldwork process. While no conclusive results were obtained, it was possible to ascertain that the area has a propensity toward the alien activity captured on images, and traces that suggest an otherworldly presence.
Daniel Valverdi, Jorge Marrón and Daniel Szauter, members of Código Ovni, began investigating the events surrounding the “Reserva Natural Los Robles”, a biosphere belonging to the municipality of Moreno, and the Roggero Dam, with the hope of unraveling the mysteries recorded at this location.
The researchers set their magnifying glasses to work to the West of the connurbated area nearly 2 years ago, convinced that this was an ideal location to expand their UFO research. It was here that the came across signs and eyewitness accounts suggesting mysterious activities of a possible alien nature.
In a conversation with Expedientes Secretos, Valverdi set forth the details of the investigation, which remains active and has had two outings aimed at unraveling the hidden secrets at the heart of the nature park, but which evidently, have their origin in the skies above.
“The first prints we started working with at the site were left behind by something that didn’t quite manage to land on the ground, but did leave circular marks on the grass, and apparently released a magnetic material on which we continue to work,” said Valverdi, who believes that these marks are the remains of UFO visitations.
However, these marks on the ground are also the result of another type of activity that is being studied by the group, based on the graphic accounts of fishermen, local residents and policemen who took a while in recovering their breath after the events they experienced.
One of them is Hector Losa, responsible for guarding the Roggero Dam. He explained how the cabin located above the dam became the target of a singular experience in which a buzzing sound heralded a monumental bath of powerful white light that washed over the building.
Losa became aware of the light – and associated buzzing – as his TV set lost reception and two policemen patrolling the area approached the cabin to find out the source of the glow, which suddenly went out.
Strange Things
Adrian Lopez also informed researchers of how an incandescent light took over a stable during another incredible event, worthy of the best chapter of the X-Files tv series.
But there’s more. Valverdi and his team obtained the story of how a group of fishermen, returning home after an unsuccessful outing, were surrounded by a dense fog. Within the foggy mantle was a light that vanished at the same rate it moved upward.
Aside from the prints and lights, however, there is another mystery in the nature park that members of Codigo Ovni are trying to unravel based on information collected: it involves an animal-like entity that engages in activities ranging from pranks to farm bird depredations in the depths of the nature park.
According to Valverdi, the information gleaned by his group suggests the existence of a strange-looking, unique creature responsible for the deaths of chickens, ducks and geese throughout the nature park.
”If we had to define it,” says Valverdi, “we would say that it’s an animal-like predatory entity,” described as having a hairy, simian appearance, standing 1.20 meters tall and endowed with claws.
This detail is one which multiplies the degree of mystery: there is no known animal in the local fauna whose claws would leave the type of marks found by the researchers in the depths of the nature park, where a figure of uncommon appearance lurks in the bush, stealthy and suspenseful.
A Prowling, Predatory and Prankish Creature
Forest ranger Cacho Ferrer contributed a disquieting story for the investigation conducted by Codigo Ovni’s members in October, involving the strange creature that frequents the area and who is responsible for predations and even pranks.
Ferrer and Hector Losa, mentioned earlier, witnessed a series of curious and unexplained events near the entrance of the Archaeological Museum located near the nature park, where someone methodically unraveled a chain that fastened the iron gates to the establishment. Whenever they heard noise coming from that location, and witnesses turned their eyes to the gate, they were never able to see anyone; however, when approaching the museum entrance, they would always find the chain on the ground, meaning that whoever unraveled it had to engage in very discreet movements to achieve its purpose.
Eyes in the Dark of Night
One of the most direct contact experiences with the cryptic creature dwelling in Reserva Los Robles involved a group of fishermen who were getting ready to spend a night at the shores of the Roggero Reservoir. They witnessed a figure completely different to anything known: an erect figure covered in hair, seen behind the bushes.
The creature stood some two meters tall, had a very large head and somewhat luminous eyes. The shock of the moment kept the terrified fishermen from properly focusing their flashlights on it, and the creature disappeared into the combination of night and vegetation.

- ENCOUNTERS WITH THE UNKNOWN DEPARTMENT -
UFO Experience Changes Woman’s Life
Miriam Delicado has been on an
incredible 20-year journey that began on the outskirts of 100 Mile
house one October night in 1988.
The current Vancouv-erite, who was 22 at the time, lived in northern BC and she and four others were on their way to the Lower Mainland when the incredible is said to have happened.
Driving south along Hwy. 97, just past Prince George, Delicado said a pair of huge, luminescent lights drew up and followed within 10 feet of their back bumper.
“It was night time and we thought it was a truck but the lights would follow us when we were alone and then disappear when a car or a house came into view,” said Delicado. “After the lights had been following us for hours, we came to 100 Mile House and I thought we’d be able to lose whatever it was.”
They nervously sped through town and, within minutes of leaving 100 Mile, the lights were back on their tail, appearing and disappearing within the blink of an eye, she said.
“I started panicking and told my friend to pull over. She said no, because she was scared, but I told her that it wasn’t her they wanted, it was me. As soon as we stopped she turned into a zombie. Her head flopped back and she just had a blank stare and the back seat people were in animated suspension,” said Delicado.
What happened next brought Delicado to the realization that her inner fears had been well-founded.
“The two spheres were a foot behind us and the car was engulfed in bright light. I turned to the front of the car and saw a craft sitting on the road. It was luminescent and it was hard to see the details but it looked like there was steam coming off of it,” she said.
Short beings, close to four feet tall, with big round, black eyes and large, childlike heads approached her.
“They had a small mouth and tiny nose and wore a one-piece suit and I heard instructions in my head to get out of the car. I was scared but not terrified, more in a state of confusion, but they kept saying not to be afraid. We will not harm you,” said Delicado.
The beings took her hand and they all walked a short way along the highway and up an embankment. Delicado said that when she looked up, she saw a larger craft with an open doorway.
“There were two tall beings, seven feet tall, in the doorway. They had blond hair of the purest white, large, water blue eyes and they wore long robes,” she said.
Delicado boarded the craft, which she recalled to have had a metallic interior with a sterile feel.
“In the centre was a circular work area with stools and overhead was a hovering white light ball of what I think was energy. It seemed to be a control centre where information streamed from the ball to the beings,” she said.
Her communication with the beings seemed to occur through telepathy.
“They sat me down on some kind of light chair recliner and, in front of me, a screen appeared which showed pictures of possible futures of the Earth. I saw an earthquake aftermath and they explained what it was and seemed to have the ability to place the experience within me. They gave me the physical ability to experience the trauma,” she said.
Delicado said she spent about three hours on the craft, watching what appeared to be a movie of some sort, before returning to the car. Everyone woke up when she got back and there was conversation about the lights, but no recognition of what she claims to have seen.
She drew the group’s attention to what she said were a group of glowing eyes on the side of the road. Everyone else thought they were deer, but Delicado believed they were aliens, watching.
They continued on their journey to the Lower Mainland without conversation about what Delicado believes to have happened but, the next day, new memories that had been embedded in her mind started to spill out.
Experiences of war, meteors hitting the earth and other disasters played over and over in her head.
“They started to filter clearly into my mind. All of these possibilities of a future we are heading for if we don’t change the path humanity is on,” said Delicado.
instilled in her how important it is to have a respect for the earth and made her believe humans are not alone in the universe.
“We have a responsibility to ourselves and to all of life,” she said.
Delicado believes the beings she claims to have seen are the caretakers of the earth.
“They are not allowed to interfere with what we are doing here on earth, but they give people like me information and we have the free will to do what we want with the information.”
She kept it all her own secret for 15 years but, during that time, Delicado claims to have had many telepathic communications with the beings.
There were also unusual encounters, she said, with men who looked and dressed the same and all claimed to work in the computer industry.
“They all talked about the same thing. About computer technology and about aliens and they all said they installed super-computers for the government,” said Delicado, noting that she’s met others at various UFO conventions who have had the same experience.
Delicado said she was telepathically instructed on when to start publicly sharing her experience and knowledge and for the past five years has been filling requests to speak at conventions and other gatherings. She said that since going public, she’s received emails from people all over the world claiming to have had the same types of experiences.
She believes she was chosen because her soul had already chosen a conducive path, long ago.
“My family has a psychic strain,” she said, explaining that her father had psychic abilities.
“He didn’t talk about aliens, but he talked about how the earth would change one day and how we needed survival skills and know how to defend ourselves,” said Delicado.
She described her message from the aliens as not being a dark one, but one of hope and encouragement.
“These beings have been out there since the beginning of time and my understanding is that they take care of other planets out there. They are also in the dream world and some walk around us. I’ve seen them in public and they don’t look like us, but others don’t see what I’m seeing,” said Delicado, recalling encounters on city buses and other public places.
She said that everyday for her involves just trying to fit in because she finds it difficult to view the world in the same way she once did. She’s worked in the food services industry and as a nanny and house cleaner but most recently, Delicado turned author, writing a book about her experiences she called “Blue Star: Fulfilling Prophecy”.
“The right people are finding their way to the book and that’s the goal,” she said. “I want to share this story with others who have had a similar experience so they know they are on the right path and there are others out there like themselves.”
According to Delicado, her experience came shortly after she watched a television special called UFO Coverup? Live! It was a two-hour prime-time syndicated television special that was broadcast in North America and elsewhere on Oct. 14, 1988.
A couple of high-level U.S. government intelligence officials, disguised as “The Falcon” and “Condor” were interviewed in shadow and with masked voices. They disclosed information about the U.S. government’s involvement in UFOS and alien interaction, UFO crashes and occupant retrievals. The show also included the first public mention of Area 51, a highly secret military airfield in Nevada used for testing experimental aircraft and weaponry and a central component to UFO folklore.

People Turning to Psychics to Predict Economic Future
Forget about financial
advisers, more and more people are turning to psychics. One Augusta
psychic says more people are paying her to predict their financial
future.
It's a supernatural force people may or may not believe in: the ability to predict the future. But it's a power Stephanie Moreno says she has. After ten years of professional psychic reading, Moreno says she's noticed a change. People aren't asking about love, marriage or family.
"No matter what time of day it is, they will call, set up an appointment. 'Just tell me about my future.' They are worried. A lot of them are in debt,” said Moreno.
Moreno says her business has improved with more and more people wanting know what their financial future holds.
"They're confused, they're worried. They ask, 'what's going to happen to my business? Am I going to have to lay more people off? Can I keep my job?'" said Moreno.
The answers may not be what they want to hear.
"It's hard, but I have to. They don't like it. But it will give them time to find out something else or be prepared for it," said Moreno.
As far as the recession, Moreno predicts the economy will brighten up soon.
“Be patient, wait it out. Don’t be as worried as everyone is. It’s crazy about how worried people are,” said Moreno.
Moreno tells 26 News she predicts the economy should get better by the end of 2009 and beginning of 2010. And if you play with the stock market, she says things will start improving in four to six months.

Big Coffee Drinkers Hallucinate More
People who drink more than
seven cups of coffee a day tend to hallucinate more than less
caffeine-driven colleagues, according to a study published Wednesday.
Those with a high caffeine intake are three times more likely to have heard a non-existent person's voice than those who drink one cup a day, said the research by psychologists at Durham University.
But the study noted that the tendency to hear voices or have other hallucinations may not be caused by caffeine, but simply reflect the kind of people who drink lots of coffee.
"This is a first step towards looking at the wider factors associated with hallucinations," said Simon Jones, lead author of the study which appears in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.
"Previous research has highlighted a number of important factors, such as childhood trauma," he said. "Many such factors are thought to be linked to hallucinations, in part because of their impact on the body's reaction to stress."
Co-author Charles Fernyhough stressed that the study did not confirm a causal link between caffeine intake and hallucinations, noting also that three per cent of people regularly hear voices in their head.
"One interpretation may be that those students who were more prone to hallucinations used caffeine to help cope with their experiences," he said.
"More work is needed to establish whether caffeine consumption, and nutrition in general, has an impact on those kinds of hallucination that cause distress."
The researchers now plan to study the impact of other forms of food and drink on hallucinations.
"It's surprising that there has been so little research into nutrition and hallucinations. In some countries high consumption levels of sugar and saturated fat are linked to poor mental health outcomes," said Jones.
"Given the link between food and mood, and particularly between caffeine and the body's response to stress, it seems sensible to examine what a nutritional perspective may add."
