In the years since Dan Brown unleashed The Da Vinci Code unto the world, there has been much speculation, but it’s time to settle the matter for once and for all: is there actually a hidden message in Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper?

Brown’s 2003 novel ignited conspiracy theories about an alternative relationship between Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ. The novel claims the figure sitting on Jesus’s right hand side is actually Mary Magdalene, not the disciple John as many would have us believe.

Despite the fact that Brown’s theories are largely derivative of former works and the novel never purported to be anything other than fiction, the conspiracy captivated expert and amateur sleuths alike. A video from the Smithsonian examines the work in an attempt to determine whether it truly conceals a hidden message from the Italian master.

In the video, the Milanese inventor and da Vinci expert Mario Taddei explains his rejection of the Brown theory: “Before Leonardo da Vinci there were hundreds of ‘Last Suppers,’ and when he painted The Last Supper he had to follow some rules. These rules want to have the people in that position and with that smile so that people could recognize the apostles one by one.”

It must be understood that da Vinci was painting in a tradition of depictions of the scene, within which the apostles feature certain recognizable traits. For example, the video explains, Saint Peter is always depicted holding a knife, Judas is recognizable from the purse of silver he carries, and Saint John is always depicted as a youthful and feminine figure.

Like most experts, Taddei disregards the claims of The Da Vinci Code, explaining: “Is this John or Mary Magdalene? It’s a very easy question, but it’s a stupid question, because it must be John, because Leonardo had to copy the last suppers before him, and John looks like a woman.”

That said, Taddei does not dismiss the idea of the painting concealing an encoded secret out of hand. He suggests that perhaps there actually is a secret message from the master embedded in this work, but it depends on how one chooses to read da Vinci’s interpretation of the depicted scene.

Taddei explains that while numerous earlier artworks had illustrated the same scene, there was one crucial difference. In every single former version of the last supper, Jesus and his gathered disciples are painted with halos and thereby elevated to the status of saints. In da Vinci’s version of the last supper however, none of the subjects are adorned with the angelic accessories.

It is up to the observer whether or not they choose to give weight to da Vinci’s depiction of the 13 subjects sans halos, but Taddei suggests the omission was intentional and indicates da Vinci was making a statement as controversial five centuries ago, as Dan Brown’s theories are today.

“I believe that Leonardo never put the halos because he thinks that those people are common people and this is the true secret of Leonardo,” Taddei explains. “There is no extra-terrestrial or supernatural object inside The Last Supper. Leonardo wants to tell us that the 13 men are simple men, and this is something much more powerful.”

In a related story, Biblical scholar Joseph Atwill recently wrote on his blog: "Christianity may be considered a religion, but it was actually developed and used as a system of mind control to produce slaves that believed God decreed their slavery.”

The scholar argues that at the time, Jewish sects in Palestine were awaiting a ‘warrior Messiah’, which became an increasing problem after the Roman Empire failed to deal with the problem with traditional means.

As a result, the rulers resorted to psychological warfare which would appear to give the citizens what they wanted, while at the same time making sure they followed their rules.

Mr Atwill added: "They surmised that the way to stop the spread of zealous Jewish missionary activity was to create a competing belief system.

"That's when the 'peaceful' Messiah story was invented.

"Instead of inspiring warfare, this Messiah urged turn-the-other-cheek pacifism and encouraged Jews to 'give onto Caesar' and pay their taxes to Rome.

"Although Christianity can be a comfort to some, it can also be very damaging and repressive, an insidious form of mind control that has led to blind acceptance of serfdom, poverty, and war throughout history.”

Mr Atwill even goes so far to say that “to this day, especially in the United States, it is used to create support for war in the Middle East”.

He says he first discovered this revelation when noticing Jesus is “the only fictional character in literature whose entire life story can be traced to other sources”.

By comparing the New Testament to the 'War of the Jews' by Josephus – the sole surviving account of first century Judea – he found the parallels between the two are uncanny.

Mr Atwill: ”What seems to have eluded many scholars is that the sequence of events and locations of Jesus ministry are more or less the same as the sequence of events and locations of the military campaign of [Emperor] Titus Flavius as described by Josephus.

"This is clear evidence of a deliberately constructed pattern.

"The biography of Jesus is actually constructed, tip to stern, on prior stories, but especially on the biography of a Roman Caesar."

Created in the 1960s by a Buddhist woodcarver, the wooden Virgin Mary resided quietly for years in the chapel of a Japanese convent in the northwestern town Akita. Yet today, the statue and her tiny chapel are world renowned for miraculous apparitions and healings. Beginning in 1973, the solid wooden statue was seen weeping, perspiring, and bleeding. She also reportedly cured a deaf nun and healed a visitor’s brain tumor. Scientists have not been able to explain these phenomena. Catholic leaders have approved of the Lady of Akita miracles, albeit hesitantly.

Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa, 42, entered the Our Lady of Akita convent in May 1973. A recent convert from Buddhism, Sister Agnes had spent the past several decades battling numerous health problems, believed to have stemmed from a botched appendix surgery. For years, she had been deaf in her left ear and slowly, her ability to hear out of her right hear was diminishing. A few months before entering the convent, her hearing was officially lost, as documented by her application for and approval of state disability subsidies. As per state policy, her total and incurable deafness was confirmed by two experts (Dr. Sawada of the Niigata Rosai Hospital in Joetsu, Niigata and Dr. Arai of the Eye and Ear Division of Akita Red Cross Hospital) in order for her to receive the disability payments.

After only a few weeks of being at Akita, Sister Agnes witnessed the first miracle of the Virgin Mary statue. On June 12, 1973, a brilliant light shone around the chapel’s Tabernacle and an apparition like smoke or mist hovered in the air over the altar. Sister Agnes saw “a multitude of beings similar to Angels who surrounded the altar in adoration before the Host.” She was also visited by an apparition she believed to be her guardian Angel, whom she described as having “a round face, an expression of sweetness . . . a person covered with a shining whiteness like snow.” The Angel prayed with Sister Agnes and offered her advice and guidance. The nun confided the miraculous events to the Catholic leader in the area, Bishop John Shojiro Ito, as well as the convent’s director, Reverend Teiji Yasuda.

Beginning on June 28, 1973, Sister Agnes began having stigmatic experiences (wounds or sensations of pain on the wrists and/or feet in the places where Jesus was nailed to the cross). On the palm of her left hand, a small, cross-shaped wound appeared and began to bleed. The pain would start on Thursday nights and continue on throughout Friday, at times becoming almost too much for Sister Agnes to bear. Yet her guardian Angel came and comforted her, saying “The wounds of Mary are much deeper and more sorrowful than yours. Let us go to pray together in the chapel.”

After praying, Sister Agnes looked to the statue of the Virgin Mary. The three-foot tall statue was carved out a single piece of hardwood from the Judea tree. It features the Virgin standing in front of a cross with her arms held slightly forward by her sights, palms face up, in a gesture of invitation and welcome. The Virgin is depicted standing on a globe. There were no joints or cracks in the statue yet, on July 6, 1973,

    “I suddenly felt that the wooden statue came to life and was about to speak to me,” said Sister Agnes. “She was bathed in a brilliant light . . . and at the same moment, a voice of indescribable beauty struck my totally deaf ears… [The Virgin said] ‘Your deafness will be healed’”

The next day, as the nuns gather for prayers, they were shocked to discovered blood flowing from the right wrist of the statue. Every Friday throughout that July, the wound would reappear and blood would issue forth from it to the astonishment of numerous visitors.

“It seemed to be truly cut into flesh,” said another nun of the covenant. “The edge of the cross had the aspect of human flesh and one even saw the grain of the skin like a fingerprint. I said to myself at that moment that the wound was real.” At the end of July, the wounds of Sister Agnes disappeared; the wounds of the Virgin Mary would remain until September 29, although no longer bleeding.

In total, the Virgin Mary appeared to speak to Sister Agnes three times. In the third visitation, the statue proclaimed a message remarkably similar to the Third Secret of Our Lady of Fatima. Our Lady of Akita said:

    “My dear daughter, listen well to what I have to say to you. You will inform your superior. As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity...the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by My Son. Each day recite the prayer of the Rosary. With the Rosary pray for the Pope, bishops and the priests. The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, and bishops against other bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres...churches and altars sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord. The demon will be especially implacable against souls consecrated to God. The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness. If sins increase in number and gravity, there will be no longer pardon for them. With courage, speak to your superior. He will know how to encourage each one of you to pray and to accomplish works of reparation. It is Bishop Ito, who directs your community. You have still something to ask? Today is the last time that I will speak to you in living voice. From now on you will obey the one sent to you and your superior. Pray very much the prayers of the Rosary. I alone am able still to save you from the calamities which approach. Those who place their confidence in me will be saved.”

Mary promised to heal Sister Agnes hearing and, by 1982, the once-deaf Agnes had perfect hearing again, despite be declared incurable. In 1981, a South Korean woman named Teresa Chun Sun Ho had visions of the Lady of Akita while in a coma. Chun suffered from a brain tumor and was not expected to recover. Upon awaking, she traveled to Japan and prayed at the Our Lady of Akita shrine. When she returned to South Korea, her doctors were amazed to find her totally cured.

In addition to the bleeding palms, the statue was seen perspiring a sweet perform and weeping several times, some of which were caught on film by local news reporters. All told, the statue wept, perspired, or bled 101 times. The number is believed to be significant: the first 1 represents the sin a woman brought into the world (Eve biting the apple); the second 1 represents the salvation another woman brought into the world (Mary giving birth to Jesus Christ); the 0 in between represents the eternity of the Holy Spirit.

Non-Catholic specialists examined the fluids of the statue and found them to be human fluids. Initially, the Archbishop of Tokyo dismissed the miraculous claims without even visiting Akita. However, Bishop Ito, who had witnessed the miracles, pushed for the Roman officials to establish a commission. While the Holy See has never officially confirmed the legend of Our Lady of Akita, Cardinal Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI) approved of the veracity of the messages from the Virgin Mary that came to the people of Akita.

For centuries, there have long been stories in the remote corners of North America that tell of a sort of “lost “or hidden group of native inhabitants. These legends, which attribute a variety of names to these beings, have occasionally described them as “Indians without fire,” in reference to their manlike, but mostly primitive lifestyle and mannerisms.

Today, the creature in question is known as Sasquatch, or more often, by the relatively crude nickname “Bigfoot”. Belief in their existence has persisted, thanks in large part to reality television programs that make the case for the creature’s existence by following the exploits of “weekend warriors”, who utilize loads of equipment in remote areas, with hopes for tracking the animals and their mostly nocturnal activities.

As with much reality television, very little “reality”, let alone much responsible research or good science, is appears to take place on such programs. Still, perhaps these kinds of shows are not entirely without merit; after all, they do help keep alive, in some form or another, the same long tradition of adherence to witness reports of these creatures, which do appear to involve
a manlike animal said to exist in the remote regions of America.

Let’s step back for a moment and consider such a prospect carefully: that something large, and manlike, could not only exist, but also remain largely hidden, and thus unrecognized by science. Opinions on this have been extremely divided, and remain so today: on one end of the spectrum, there are those for whom debate over the existence of such a creature is no longer a question. On the other side, there are hard-lined materialists who won’t even allow for such a possibility. Somewhere between these extremes, however, is a very unique and storied tradition of observations of something that alludes science, and yet which remains consistently enough in our culture that its possible existence must be given, at very least, some consideration… whether or not that entails outright “belief.”

Consider narratives like the one that follows, which is based on an email I received some time ago. In it, an individual shared their own unusual experiences with something they couldn’t easily explain; it is a recollection which resonates well with the existing American mythos of the Sasquatch:

    "I live in Charlotte County, Florida. Here in the south where I’m from, they refer to this creature as a 'skunk ape.'

    "About a year ago, I was riding my bike home one night on a back woods trail, and in the distance, I could see what appeared to be something the shape of a very large man. This “person” — or thing — was standing near a concrete power pole. As I was on my bike, I wondered why a person would be in the woods at this time, with no light. I’m certain this creature or person was six feet tall, maybe larger.

    "As I watched, it walked off the trail into the thick of the woods. There wasn’t a sound, and there was no evidence of anything else in the area afterward. Honestly, I still wonder what I saw that night; though I heard no noise, I am sure I saw a large, human-like “thing” in the woods, that walked off into the night more like an animal than a human."

Stories like these leave much to the imagination. And yet, despite their ambiguity, the details they bring appear to be rather consistent, again, in the broader body of lore associated with the allege creatures. Once again, consider the following example, shared with me by a former soldier who had been stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, several decades ago:

    "One day, my friend and I went in search of a stream to fish deep in the forest, which we felt might have been only lightly fished (if at all). Our map-reading classes served us well, apparently, as we became totally lost that afternoon.

    "As we followed a game trail, we came upon a series of huge, barefoot prints and followed them to where it looked like he or she squatted at a downed trunk, and had dug underneath with some branches. As we arrived at the trunk ourselves, we smelled the unmistakable “death” scent, and heard something large move off into the forest. We went back the other way.

    "Never did get to even wet a line, and I’m sure we could never find that spot again, since after becoming lost, we didn’t know where we were in the first place!"

A similar story to the one above was related to me years ago by an elderly Native American named William, who resides in Western North Carolina on the Cherokee Reservation. It was during the middle 1950s, and William had been hunting squirrel on Soco Mountain in Haywood County, when he came upon a clearing where a logging operation had been underway. There, in the exposed earth, William saw a similar set of large, bare footprints that looked human, though much bigger than the typical human foot.

“They were big,” he told me. “Looked just like you or I, but barefoot. No shoe.”

William followed the footprints up the mountain, to where the clearing ended. During this time, on several occasions he spotted squirrels, which he tried to shoot with his shotgun, but missed on every occasion. As he came over the ridge and started down the opposite side of the mountain, he saw two squirrels together on a branch; a single shot from his .410 bore brought them down. When asked about this, William told me that he felt the animals couldn’t be shot as easily anywhere near the large footprints had been.

One Cherokee word associated with the creatures had been Chikly-Cuddly, while some have similarly interpreted the Cherokee god of the hunt, Tsul ‘Kalu, as being a variation on the Sasquatch legend. Interested in whether William might have known of these, I inquired about the name he gave to animal responsible for the prints he observed that day.

“Do you have a name for this creature?” I asked William, hoping not to lead the conversation, but interested to see which of the regional variants he might use.

“Yeah,” he said, eyes widening. “We always called ’em Bigfoot!”

The creature, of course, seems to have gone by many names over the years, and elusive though it remains (if it exists, of course), the stories of those who have had their own personal encounters remain compelling, if not troubling, and for a number of reasons. If true, what does this tell us about the limitations of modern science (and the resulting blind faith of its proponents)? In equal measure, how must we react to the possibility that a large, manlike creature exists in the Americas, and of greatest importance, how can such a potentially endangered animal be protected, especially if they are so seldom seen?

I often like to ask readers to share their own experiences and stories, and here again I invite anyone with stories, thoughts, or perspectives on the matter to email me with your stories. In the long run, it is my hope to be able to help foster and organize rational, reasonable discussion of the Sasquatch enigma, which examines the legends and persistent Native American mythology pertaining to this subject, as well as the ongoing reports of encounters in modernity.

Neither dismissal, nor blind faith alone will solve the mystery. However, I do hope that dialogue will remain a key toward the furtherance of our understanding this unusual, and very complex subject.

Humans could marry robots within the century. And consummate those vows.

"My forecast is that around 2050, the state of Massachusetts will be the first jurisdiction to legalize marriages with robots," artificial intelligence researcher David Levy at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands told LiveScience. Levy recently completed his Ph.D. work on the subject of human-robot relationships, covering many of the privileges and practices that generally come with marriage as well as outside of it.

At first, sex with robots might be considered geeky, "but once you have a story like 'I had sex with a robot, and it was great!' appear someplace like Cosmo magazine, I'd expect many people to jump on the bandwagon," Levy said.

Pygmalion to Roomba

The idea of romance between humanity and our artistic and/or mechanical creations dates back to ancient times, with the Greek myth of the sculptor Pygmalion falling in love with the ivory statue he made named Galatea, to which the goddess Venus eventually granted life.

This notion persists in modern times. Not only has science fiction explored this idea, but 40 years ago, scientists noticed that students at times became unusually attracted to ELIZA, a computer program designed to ask questions and mimic a psychotherapist.

"There's a trend of robots becoming more human-like in appearance and coming more in contact with humans," Levy said. "At first robots were used impersonally, in factories where they helped build automobiles, for instance. Then they were used in offices to deliver mail, or to show visitors around museums, or in homes as vacuum cleaners, such as with the Roomba. Now you have robot toys, like Sony's Aibo robot dog, or Tickle Me Elmos, or digital pets like Tamagotchis."

In his thesis, "Intimate Relationships with Artificial Partners," Levy conjectures that robots will become so human-like in appearance, function and personality that many people will fall in love with them, have sex with them and even marry them.

"It may sound a little weird, but it isn't," Levy said. "Love and sex with robots are inevitable."

Levy argues that psychologists have identified roughly a dozen basic reasons why people fall in love, "and almost all of them could apply to human-robot relationships. For instance, one thing that prompts people to fall in love are similarities in personality and knowledge, and all of this is programmable. Another reason people are more likely to fall in love is if they know the other person likes them, and that's programmable too."

In 2006, Henrik Christensen, founder of the European Robotics Research Network, predicted that people will be having sex with robots within five years, and while that hasn't happened just yet, there are companies that already sell realistic sex dolls.

"It's just a matter of adding some electronics to them to add some vibration," Levy said, or endowing the robots with a few audio responses. "That's fairly primitive in terms of robotics, but the technology is already there."

As software becomes more advanced and the relationship between humans and robots becomes more personal, marriage could result. "One hundred years ago, interracial marriage and same-sex marriages were illegal in the United States. Interracial marriage has been legal now for 50 years, and same-sex marriage is legal in some parts of the states," Levy said. "There has been this trend in marriage where each partner gets to make their own choice of who they want to be with."

"The question is not if this will happen, but when," Levy said. "I am convinced the answer is much earlier than you think."

When and where it'll happen

Levy predicts Massachusetts will be the first jurisdiction to legalize human-robot marriage. "Massachusetts is more liberal than most other jurisdictions in the United States and has been at the forefront of same-sex marriage," Levy said. "There's also a lot of high-tech research there at places like MIT."

Although roboticist Ronald Arkin at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta does not think human-robot marriages will be legal anywhere by 2050, "anything's possible. And just because it's not legal doesn't mean people won't try it," he told LiveScience.

"Humans are very unusual creatures," Arkin said. "If you ask me if every human will want to marry a robot, my answer is probably not. But will there be a subset of people? There are people ready right now to marry sex toys."

The main benefit of human-robot marriage could be to make people who otherwise could not get married happier, "people who find it hard to form relationships, because they are extremely shy, or have psychological problems, or are just plain ugly or have unpleasant personalities," Levy said. "Of course, such people who completely give up the idea of forming relationships with other people are going to be few and far between, but they will be out there."

Ethical questions

The possibility of sex with robots could prove a mixed bag for humanity. For instance, robot sex could provide an outlet for criminal sexual urges. "If you have pedophiles and you let them use a robotic child, will that reduce the incidence of them abusing real children, or will it increase it?" Arkin asked. "I don't think anyone has the answers for that yet—that's where future research needs to be done."

Keeping a robot for sex could reduce human prostitution and the problems that come with it. However, "in a marriage or other relationship, one partner could be jealous or consider it infidelity if the other used a robot," Levy said. "But who knows, maybe some other relationships could welcome a robot. Instead of a woman saying, 'Darling, not tonight, I have a headache,' you could get 'Darling, I have a headache, why not use your robot?'"

Arkin noted that "if we allow robots to become a part of everyday life and bond with them, we'll have to ask questions about what's going to happen to our social fabric. How will they change humanity and civilization? I don't have any answers, but I think it's something we need to study. There's a real potential for intimacy here, where humans become psychologically and emotionally attached to these devices in ways we wouldn't to a vibrator."

In 2008, Levy published the book: "Love and Sex with Robots: The Evolution of Human-Robot Relationships". When it comes to sex and love with robots, "the ethical issues on how to treat them are something we'll have to consider very seriously, and they're very complicated issues," Levy said.
